Medical Clinic
In July 2005, Safe Passage opened a clinic on its third floor with the support of Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The clinic provides on-site care for the children attending Safe Passage, as well as their direct family members. Many of the children suffer from health issues such as: respiratory infections, skin disorders and stomach/intestinal ailments due to the constant exposure to the pollution and toxins in their living environment. Many of their family members continue to work in the garbage dump each day and are exposed to more serious health issues ranging from methane toxicity to cancer as a result of long-term exposure to the garbage dump. The health risks that accompany working and living in close proximity to the dump are enormous.
At Safe Passage, we are working towards giving the children the opportunities, education and support needed so they can live healthy long lives. Bayer Pharmaceuticals provides a full-time Guatemalan physician and nurse, as well as the clinical supplies and medicine for the children and their families. Shared Beat, a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization based in Texas that provides basic healthcare and wellness education to children and families in impverished areas, brings medical support teams to Safe Passage several times each year. These partnerships are a much needed support, ensuring the health and well being of each child!
