The Safe Passage documentary is a journey into the heart of Guatemala City. Taking place in zones 3 and 7, which border the Municipal Garbage Dump, the film investigates Safe Passage's tireless pursuit to provide opportunity through education in an area where women and children fight to survive. At its core, this is a story about motherhood. The film follows a single mother of 5, Irina who perseveres above seemingly impossible circumstances. This is her story, but this is every mother's story. It is about the lengths that she is willing to go to provide for her children and the organization that offers the opportunity. It is about struggle, despair, sacrifice, and ultimately hope. This film is a testament to the strength of mothers everywhere and the power of people willing to meet halfway.

Filmmakers Jake Hamilton and Greg Kwedar, of One Spark Films in Austin, TX, traveled to Guatemala City to capture this incredible story in February of 2009. Almost one year before, Greg left Guatemala after two weeks of volunteering with Safe Passage, with the conviction that the Safe Passage story needed to be told. It only took one look into the depths of the Garbage Dump to confirm this. Jake and Greg were joined by photographers Daniel Davis and Phyllis Kwedar, as well as journalist Steve Miller who were the life and color behind the production blog.
