Gould Academy Team in Guatemala

Posted by Alexandra Cowen at 2009-06-16 11:21 |

Five individuals from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, visited Safe Passage from June 7 -14. Read about their art projects and special lunch with a sponsored child here!

The five member team from Gould Academy arrived with as much spunk, energy and art supplies as a team twice its size! The team members worked in Johanna Yool´s classroom doing various arts and crafts stations including painting, beading, scrapbooking and by far the most popular, button making. On their second day in the same classroom the team showed the students how to assemble an art book with the pages they had decorated earlier including a personalized photo taken by Eileen, a professional photographer by trade. During their day in the Guardería the team again set up activity stations for the 4, 5 and 6 year olds including chalk drawings, bubble blowing, stamping and coloring. The team also took their sponsor child, Kevin, to McDonald´s for lunch and were joined by his mother and younger sister, Shirley. By the end of lunch the team couldn´t help but sponsor Shirley as well. On their last day the team took Johanna´s high school students to Aqua Magic, a water park on the coast where everyone enjoyed the sun, surf, pools and volleyball. Throughout the day spontaneous English and Spanish lessons occurred, benefitting everyone´s language learning. Despite being a smaller team, the group from Gould exceeded their fundraising goal and also made a huge impact on the kids they worked with at Safe Passage.
