The teachers at Safe Passage help our students understand that they are accountable for their actions. This is an important aspect of Expeditionary Learning, which is the guiding methodology of our full-day school.
Student-led conferences are a major component of this.
In these conferences, which are held every semester, students share portfolios of their work with their parents. Their teacher helps to create a culture of trust in which the student can openly share both their achievements and difficulties from the past semester.
The report that the students prepare, with the guidance of their teacher, includes two parts: one for their academic performance, and one for their behavioral conduct.
The students practice Safe Passage’s core values of responsibility and trust, as they have to explain to their parents about any behavioral issues they might have had. The teachers affirm their students’ statements, and add any additional information.
At the end of the meeting, the students, parents, and teacher all sign an agreement about the improvements that the students will work on in the next semester.
